Weather in Tunisia

Among the most popular destinations in recent years, Tunisia is one of several countries of North Africa we love to visit. It is quite easily accessible, even by boat or ferry (click here). But what is the weather in Tunisia? How is the climate? This is a crucial question you must ask yourself if you want to get here a vacation spot, since it is always good to know what is the best time to go.

Speaking of Tunisia and its weather, it should be stressed that this country is not the same if we look at it under this point of view, since three different geographical areas are usually present here, characterized by different temperature and  climate. This means that, according to your needs, you should choose one over another. But let’s get specific and try to understand what we are talking about.

The first area that you will want to consider, is the coast of Tunisia, which is favoured by those looking for both an hot climate and the sea. Here are fairly mild temperatures all year round. In this area of Tunisia, in fact, it goes from 32° to maximum average of August to 15° of minimum average in January, there are no extreme peaks of both cold and hot. All this makes this area ideal for those who want to make a good warm, lovely holiday in the sun. The winter period, although it is not at all cold, but it is most characterized by rain and bad weather though. it is to emphasize, though, that the precipitation phenomena are never intense and frequent as in other African countries.

Heading south and going toward the centre of Tunisia, you arrive in the desert area, where the climate is drier. Here temperatures are remarkable, that sometimes rise above 40°. As you move away from the sea, then, the temperatures are rising and, above all, the climate becomes drier and more and more arid. By day it is very hot, but the temperature range is remarkable also at night time and this can create several hardships tif you are not used to this constant drop and rise in temperature. Naturally, the more the climate becomes drier, the lmore the rains diminish.

The third area is the south of Tunisia, of course, which is the arid zone par excellence.

What is, however, the climate of Tunis, the capital of the nation, as well as the most beloved city in Tunisia that is visited by tourists from all over the world? The city offers average temperatures do not rise almost never above 33 degrees and never drop below 7 degrees in January and February. This  is, of course, measured over the annual average temperatures, but it is true that Tunisia enjoys a very favorable Mediterranean climate.

At this point, the question that arises is: when is the best season to go to Tunisia? As has been noted, the best area is the coastal region, which offers a mild climate from the sea, and the more you move towards the south of the country and more are arid and semi-desert climate and, above all, significant temperature changes, that does not make very pleasant stay. So it is recommended beside Summer time, also Autumn and  Spring and it is preferable to stay in the coastal area, where the temperature is mild and pleasant, carefully choosing the time of year.

You should prefer the period of Spring or, why not, that Autumn, both very similar as they show the same main features. All this to avoid the very hot summers or extremely rainy days that might spoil the holiday. Of course, those who love the hot summer will find this is the best time to visit Tunisia, enjoying the sea and beaches, as well as all other highlights ranging from the culture to the Tunisian cousine and the history. In summary, April, May and October are the ideal months to tour in Tunis and its surroundings, while in June and September (August but if you do not stand the extreme heat) are the ideal months for those who want to live it a nice beach holiday. It should be noted that, at times, the bathing season lasts until October and this could be an excellent time to decide to leave.

To visit the desert:

If you love desertic area, instead, the best time is winter, since the temperatures are below 30 degrees and, therefore, acceptable. Therefore, the period from November to March turns out to be ideal for all those who are fascinated by the desert and want to visit it. Of course, the summer season is highly not recommended to all those who want to venture out to discover the desert, as this is the period with the highest temperatures ever and the heat does not allow the visit to those who are not used to. If you can not go in the winter, also April and October are two good months to visit the desert, as long as they are solutions to refresh while staying on site.

Before concluding, here are some helpful tips for those leaving for Tunisia. Those heading to Tunis or in the coastal area during the summer should bring along light clothing, but also a sweater for the evening. During the winter, however, they will do fine clothes for half a season but also sweaters and a jacket for the evening. For those who go, however, in the desert, they will be very useful lightweight clothes but covering and a sweatshirt or a jacket for the evening.

In not  tourist areas, it is recommended that women have not too skimpy clothes, as Tunisia is a Muslim country, although open minded, especially in larger cities devoted to tourism.
